Voltage Measurement Can Improve the Quality of Supply

Brief Summary

The current electricity grid regulation offers grid operators hardly any incentives to systematically measure and improve voltage quality. A recent short study by the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) and the Fraunhofer IEG shows options for action on how targeted regulation can succeed - for example through mandatory measurements and integration into incentive regulation.

The increasing challenges in medium and low-voltage grids due to the energy transition and coal phase-out are a particular focus. The study recommends a step-by-step approach for the introduction of a bonus-malus system that rewards grid operators for good voltage quality and penalises them for poor quality.
