Emergency Power Supplies in Hospitals and Data Centres.

According to DIN VDE 0100 part 710, if the voltage over one or more external cables providing the general power supply to a hospital falls to less than 90% of the nominal grid voltage for a period of more than 0.5s, the power supply must be switched for safety. Looking in the direction of energy flow, this switching has to take place at the main distribution board level, behind the feed transformers and power sources. To ensure safety, it has to guarantee that the electrical systems can be connected within 15s to a secure power source providing energy for 24 hours. Reduction of the operational period from 24 hours to 3 is only permissible if the medical treatment and inspection of patients can be safely ended within this period and the hospital evacuated.


Only proper project planning and quality-assured measurement prevent nasty surprises. The required measurement technology has to fulfil diverse requirements. Voltages, currents, power and frequency must be recorded at a high resolution of 10 ms. An average measured over 200ms or one second would not be able to detect these network fluctuations. Deviations from the sinusoidal wave and voltage transients can be recorded using oscilloscopes. Using various trigger options such as a sine envelope curve trigger can provide even more information on the fault.
